How to break the social media addiction and stress in 21 days

A day without social media feels like, a day filled with fresh air. Social media have made us miserable. It's been 9 years since I have first used Facebook. While I first started writing on Facebook back in 2011, 2012, it was great for me, I did write a lot even in my keypad phone, thousands of words every day. The passion I had for writing was amazing, I loved it. But as time passed by, I stopped writing on facebook, I moved to the, I started writing in Blogger, WordPress in 2012. While it was amazing at first, but I lost my zeal and interest slowly, mainly because I was also doing Masters by then and I kind of lost my self-esteem to write anymore or maybe I just became lazy.

Anyway, while Facebook and WhatsApp have given so many opportunities to know about people, but it's been 9 years and I think I need a break from all of it and focus mainly on blogging and real-world social interaction just like the old times.

Yes, Social media stress in our life, social media destroyed the importance of privacy, we are all connected in the social media, but being connected with the each other i the social media all the time , creates stress and you don't need that kind of stress in your life, because social media is not the most important thing in your life, most important thing is not looking great in the photos, it's all about inner peace. Social media nowadays feels like repeated noise of the same kind, it feels like people are shouting, sharing the same thing over and over again, and there is a tremendous amount of variety, but still, it's too much media consumption, which is not healthy. It's like all these foods for the mind will create cause problems in your mind, it will give you brain fog, create numbness, tiredness. I am talking about these side effects because I have used too much social media in the last 7-8 years, now when I think about it, I feel like what the hell, I have really wasted so much time, haven't I and achieved nothing, well that's something I have to live with..

So, a day without facebook, WhatsApp feels so much better, it feels like the brain is not tired anymore, it feels like so much energy. Digital world has slowly consumed us, everyone is just too busy on their phone, feeling stress but they choose not to stop using it, just like me, I was using my phone for more than 5 hours every day, hell, if I did read a book, I would have felt much better, or if I did go out or do some writing in my blog, it would have been much better, anyway I have wasted so much time on my phone, I feel so bad about it, wasting my time on things that do not matter in the long run, in the big picture.

So, there are some questions we all need to ask ourselves ----

1.  The real question is are we all addicted to our phone?

2. Is this relationship with our phone have contributed to our wellbeing of body and mind..

3. Is our social media and phone usage increasing our stress?

4. Is social media is the right tool for communication for the modern world?

5. Does social media make society a better place or keeps it the same?

6. Does the Internet increase corruption in society?

7. Are we too focused on the internet, we have stopped looking at the real world?

It's hard, I really don't know how long I could stay without using Facebook, WhatsApp. Well, it is a habit and habits are earned.

So habit can be broken too. I have been reading about this 21 days rule about habit-building or breaking.

The 21-day rule is a method of doing/saying/being something for 21 days, to make your 'something' become a habit. These are habits that you have built up over a period of time.

So, is it scientific ??

A 2006 paper published by a Duke University researcher found that over 40% of our everyday actions were not conscious, but habits.

Well then, you can make any habit, and remove any habit that is causing you stress, pain, and trouble.

If 40 % of our daily activities are based on habits, then we really need to change our habits to make any change in our life, for better of course.

So social media addiction or high usage of social media can only be lowered down to a minimum or nothing with the power of habit.

AFTER 1 MONTH

After one month of leaving social media, I feel much better. The mind fog has gone, the anxiety, the depression is slowly going down. Well, it was not easy to leave all the social media platform just like that, but I had to, because it's been ages that I have been using them and I could only remember suffering from anxiety, frustration in social media, even though there were good moments, but they were temporary good feeling and that did not have any permanent value.

The only downside of leaving social media platform like Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram that you do not know what is happening in the life hundreds of people you know, but you know it's completely fine, I could live with not knowing in the life of people I personally don't know or does not bring any value to my life.

The problem with leaving social media is that I tried it many times, it has become a modern-day cigarette as Kanye West said in an interview. Even celebrities, international figures like Kanye West said about his sex addiction and how social media actually fuels this.

Another problem with social media is that it does not have any filter system form NSFW stuff, which is currently shown in the public openly, and these platforms are okay with it and the society seems also being okay with it. But it is not okay, this does not help the people.

There is one great problem with social media that is that it promotes negativity, debates, keyboard fighting with no valuable outcome as a result.

The content in social media seems to be repetitive, thousands of people are sharing the same stuff, memes, which makes social media only boring and frustrating.

Well, social media has many problems, one of the main problem is it has become an addiction for many, maybe I was addicted too, sharing memes, sharing status on WhatsApp all the time, but in the end the time spent on these activities had not any value outcome, it was meaningless and temporary, I know everything does not have to permanent, but if we spend our 3 hours on social media every day, that is  90  wasted hours per month !

90 hours per year is 1080 hours, that is 45 Days.

I have been a heavy user of social media platforms for like 7 years, I was addicted to it. I wasted almost 315 + days on social media, I did waste more than 1 year of my life doing nothing except scrolling down, looking at a screen, looking at people's pictures, texting with people I don't even remember now!

It is not hard to leave social media, once you feel that is leading you nowhere good, which is adding nothing positive value in your life.
